We all have a mission on Earth. And that assignment was predetermined way before we were born. If you have ever wondered where you were before you existed on Earth, The Baby Chronicles will help you to pause and ponder God’s unique calling on your life.
Beatrice Bruno claims that God is concerned with every happening in our lives—He’s not distant, but actually closer than we think.
I met Beatrice in the radio studio while broadcasting, The Good News. The moment I sat beside her, I felt the connection of a long-lost sister. She’s real—speaking truths, and I wanted to get to know her. I asked her to interview with me and as she took me behind the scenes, I began to see behind the “seens.”
When you were a little girl, you’d asked for a typewriter. Once you received it, you would type away in bed, hiding under the covers, way past your bedtime. Did you always know that God had called you to be a writer?
Dawna, when I was a little girl, my favorite activity was story-telling. I remember lining up my dolls, the cats, the dogs in what I now know is theatre style. And then, I would weave these stories together to entertain them. I honestly did not know that writing was a calling, but I know that it burned in my heart. By the time I was in seventh grade Literature class, I was hooked on writers such as Edgar Allan Poe (quoth the Raven, NeverMore!), and anything by Beverley Cleary. I was also reading Harold Robbins novels and had a great desire to write books like that. When I received that typewriter for Christmas, I began crafting stories with my minimal typing skills. By the time I was a High School Senior, I was typing about 110 words per minute. That skill comes in very handy in my life today. LOL!
What inspired you to write The Baby Chronicles?
I am a huge fan of Christian author Frank Peretti, author of This Present Darkness, Piercing the Darkness, etc. He goes into the spiritual aspect in his books concerning things that happen in situations in which we know there is darkness, but, we often overlook those things. I began reading his books early in my relationship with the Lord, about 1991 or -2. After reading these first two books, I was hooked on the aspects of spiritual warfare and going behind the “seens” of what we see and experience in the natural realm.
After becoming a born-again follower of Jesus Christ in 1991 and leaving the Army in 1992, I began contemplating spiritual warfare and how and why we do what we do. I was stationed with some really amazing chicks in the Army for the 15 years and I was afforded the opportunity to serve. As I remembered their lives and how they came to be soldiers, I began compiling the composite characters you find in The Baby Chronicles – Where You Were Before You Were. I wanted to show how the spiritual realm is more important than the physical realm when it comes to our beginnings. I also wanted to show the workings of how the enemy of our souls, the devil, can cause situations and circumstances to be completely different than what God created us to be and to happen in our lives.
In your book, you remind us that the spiritual realm is happening around us each moment. How can we be more aware of the daily battle and look at life’s circumstances through this unseen realm?
For the answer(s) to this question, I will have to take your readers into scripture.
Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
II Corinthians 10: 3 – 5 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
In Ephesians, in the very next verse, we are encouraged, admonished even to put on the WHOLE armor of God. Now, this isn’t something we do just once in our Christian existence. We must put on the whole armor each and every day of our lives. In The Baby Chronicles, I show those demons who plague the lives of the characters. Those same demons plague each and every one of us, every day, if we do not take a stand against them.
In the scripture from II Corinthians, we must realize that the thoughts that attack our minds are not necessarily from the Lord. We must cast down imaginations and every high thing that would push against the knowledge of God in our lives and bring those same thoughts into the obedience of Jesus Christ. The lives we see in the natural realm is only half the story. We must allow ourselves to see the spiritual warfare going on around us every step of the way of our lives.
Tell us something fun about yourself.
I am a “cut up.” I love having fun. As a motivational speaker/author, I like disarming my audience’s preconceived notions about what a Drill Sergeant is and how that person will be during their presentation. Although I bring it on home at the end, during my presentations, I make people laugh – at themselves, their situations and circumstances, and life. Then I give them what they need so they can be all God has called them to be in their season of life.
Just recently, I reconnected with a group of soldiers I trained in Basic Training and graduated in 1988. They find that I have not changed after all those years. The only thing that has changed is that now, I am a born-again follower of Jesus Christ.
How do we trust God when it appears He didn’t rescue from a hard circumstance or answer a pleading prayer?
Dawna, this is a really excellent question that, again, has to be answered in scripture. It’s not as easy as one would think. But by the same token, it’s not as difficult. It’s about relationship: with God, with self, with others, with life.
Proverbs 3:5 –6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.”
Is it easy to trust God? Not all the time. As a matter of fact, there are times when we look at God as a suspect and not as our blessed redeemer. But, He is our redeemer! He is our Savior and our Exceeding Great Reward. God is able to do far more than we give Him credit for. But by the same token, we must allow Him to have more of our lives than we give to Him. That way, when the difficult times come, we can continue to trust in Him and believe that He is working all things out for our good and for His glory.
What do you want readers to know about God through your book?
That He is not some distant Being who creates us and then sets us in chaos to see how we will fare. He is our sovereign King who is concerned with everything that transpires in our lives. When reading The Baby Chronicles, key in on the conversations God has, not just with the angelic presences, but with Jesus, with the babies before they are born. You will see that He has a very specific plan and purpose for each of us.
