Dodge City Kansas was my destination. A darling little hotel was welcoming and provided gracious hosts.
I was headed to speak to a group of ladies. But before leaving, the “must do” thing of the night, was to take a picture in the hotel’s jail cell. The owner of the hotel chatted away while taking my picture.
“You’re all dressed up. Where are you headed?” Asked the owner.
“I’m an author and speaker. I’m on my way to encourage women to conquer their fears.”
“Is that what your book is about?”
“Yes, Sir— Conquering the fears of our hearts.”
“I would like to buy one. Would you autograph it for me?”
“Sign it to: Best Western Country Inn and Suites. I’ve had many famous people stay here, including Willie Nelson! We have a wall of fame. Do you have a headshot I can put on our wall?”
Oh, sure I carry around my headshot everywhere I go. Yes, because, like Willie Nelson, one SHOULD expect to autograph head shots and have them hung on a wall with other famous people. NOT!
“No Bill, I don’t have one with me but I can get you one.”
“Sounds great. Now don’t forget, I want you on the wall.”
Now, running later than United Airlines, I jumped into my car and headed to the event.
The next morning, I found myself hanging out with a broken toilet. It spoke to me with sick eyes, “Please don’t call the doctor.”
On the phone with the front desk:
“Mrs. Hetzler, no one is available right now but you can come pick up a plunger from the front desk.”
Seriously? Come get a plunger???? I am on the wall of fame lady!!!! I don’t do plungers!?
“Thank you, I will be right down.”
With crumpled hair that looked like it just jumped out of a Ruffles potato chip bag, I headed to the front desk to begin my new career as a plumber. I proudly carried my new tool back upstairs.
I love how He hovers over my heart to keep it humble.
Later that morning, after a fight with my hair (one in which I did not win), I found myself having a picture taken with the owner’s wife and with my headshot in the background on the wall of fame. What fun! I was honored to be next to the legend, Willie Nelson. Bill said that Willie is fearless! It sounded like Willie conquered the fears of his heart. So there I was hanging with Willie, while thoughts of pictures and plungers ran though my mind.
I sure love this town— and especially The Best Western Country Inn and Suites! They made a city gal with a country heart feel special. And, I now have a backup career in plumbing, when I retire from writing and speaking.
