An elderly man celebrates his birthday with his friends gathered around him. His cake holds two numeric candles, 9 and 0 commemorating his 90th birthday. Next, an elderly woman enters the room. A friend says to the birthday boy, “Look who’s here.” In response, he quickly flips his number 9 candle upside down so his birthday candles read 60. He pretends to blow them out while watching her. She walks over to him and says, “You’re not fooling anyone.” Everyone laughs.
The commercial was titled, Think young, pass it on.
It was late and not sure if David was sleeping, I whisper, “You still awake?”
While searching for a remote control button in the dark, (I never get to touch the remote unless he’s asleep and even then I find myself in trouble) I find the rewind button and press it. I quietly say, “You’ve got to see this commercial. It’s so sweet— this old guy is trying to impress a woman.”
Peeking up from his pillow he says, “That commercial has been on for years. You really should get your nose out of those books and watch more TV. You can learn a lot from it.” His head clunks back down.
I should’ve know that I can’t teach the TV master anything. I must watch more TV.
He reaches over and takes my hand. I drift off to sleep hoping that at age 90, I will still be trying to impress him.
