I confess. I eavesdropped on a conversation. But it was too beautiful not to listen in, and glean from. A young girl, maybe twelve or so was getting her nails done across from me. She gazed adoringly at her new French manicure. A beautiful, dark haired woman in her twenties interrupted her trance. They both jumped up with excitement. The younger girl beamed.
Twenty-something: “You look amazing.”
Tween: “Thank you.”
Laughter, hugging, giggles and smiles bounced off the walls and landed in my lap.
Twenty-something talked to this young woman like they were the same age.
“Tell me.” she exclaimed. “Tell me all about your life and what’s been going on.”
Twenty-something was so enthusiastic and interested in this young lady. She touched her hair and affirmed how beautiful she looked. She leaned in closer to her little friend, and asked “grown up” questions to her. She treated her as an equal, and didn’t talk down to her. It was the beauty of sister to sister talk. Her questions, and excitement was something, I must admit, that I admired.
That’s how you talk to a lady. Any lady. Your spouse, your sister, your friend, your mother, your grandmother.
Affirm. Listen. Care. Attentive. Loving. Interested.
It will change the atmosphere of the room, and light up the world.
