I write to encourage others, I speak to inspire, and I enjoy connecting people. Hopefully the things I do make a small difference in the world, but it only scratches the surface if I don’t do them with love.
The word love has a broad definition: romance, passion, affirmation, love of self, brotherly love…but these meanings are based on feelings—they can fade over time or become stronger with dedication. The Alpha of all love is a way of being. Like God’s love which is steadfast and unchanging because love is the mere essence of who He is. I’m talking about the greek word, agape. Agape love is expressed by what it does. It’s a willful delight, faithfulness, action and sacrificial—seeking the best for another.
God loves like this because it’s His very makeup. Until we are restored to perfection, agape love doesn’t come naturally. We have to make a determined act of the will through God’s power to love others this way. It’s what we’re called to do above all else.
Americans are living in a time of strife and discord. Fear and injustice play out each day on the news. We are divided, but we must unite! We can begin to replace fear by opening our hearts to others and practicing agape love.
Romans 12:9 says, “Love must be sincere.” The word is, ἀνυπόκριτος which means genuine and without hypocrisy.
Agape when someone doesn’t agree with you.
Agape another because they are different from you.
Empower others by giving agape even when they don’t demonstrate it.
Dispel fear by being agape. Always.
Love is action. Love does. That’s how we make a real difference. As we begin a new year, be the one—the one who stands firm and moves within the heart of God. Be the one who desires God’s will above your own. As you move in the brushstrokes of His agape love, He will teach you how to do it.
Together, we can make a difference.
“But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.” I Corinthians 13:13 MSG
