It all began a few months ago when David gave Zorro the last bite of cinnamon raisin toast and left Mya begging. He looked sardonically at her and said, “Sorry girl, it’s a sexist day and the boys win.” She cocked her head in confusion. Why isn’t there any toast for me? I’m a good little girl.
I didn’t have any toast left, so poor Mya went without.
The next day I was ready. I took a small piece of crust and hid it in my napkin for Mya. David played his same joke, giving Zorro the last bite. “It’s the sexist game Mya. Boys win again!” He delighted in the boy’s victory.
“Not so fast,” I smirked, “there’s a piece right here for you sweet girl.” I opened my napkin and handed her the toast. “Girls win today.”
David looked at Zorro and said, “Mmmmmm! Tomorrow we will win, boy.”
We play it every morning over breakfast—the sexist game. David sits across from me with Zorro accompanying him on the “manly” side of the table. Mya joins me on the girl’s side. This game has continued for months, both of us trying to top the other in hiding our last bite of toast so we can win the battle of the sexes.
This morning while making breakfast, I took a small piece of my toasty bread and put it in an empty vitamin bottle. While we ate, we discussed the day’s schedule and suspiciously eyed each other’s plate. Attempting to hide my smile, I asked David about his current project. As we finished breakfast, once more he looked around to ensure that I had nothing left or hidden, then he pulled out a last bite of his toast from under his plate and gave it to Zorro. “Boy’s win aga—“
But before he could make his podium speech, I interrupted him.
“You should know that the girls always win.” With a look of satisfaction, I unscrewed the cap of the vitamin bottle and handed Mya her winning piece of toast. Zorro’s ears turned sideways and he looked at David like, What the heck?
Mya howled in victory.
You guys, this really happens in my house! And so, the sexist game continues. But I’m running out of ideas so if you have any, please help us girls out.
