Words. They can strengthen and they can weaken. Powerful, they are. Hard conversations can stretch a relationship to the point of grasping to keep the fibers of friendship together. Words can also bond and strengthen one another.
At a leader’s conference Andy Stanley said, (and I’m paraphrasing) “You can’t surround yourself with ‘Yes’ men and women. You need people in your life to speak truth to you, even when those truths are difficult to hear.”
So I practice receiving words and direction from those in my life that don’t always agree with me. It’s difficult, but necessary. David does this seamlessly. He’s my constant, my truth when I need direction. His words can be challenging. I like the affirmation way better.
This is how I grow spiritually—Opening myself to the words I don’t want to hear. Embracing the one who speaks life to me. The key is, knowing the heart of that person.
Words for the soul, they can be beautiful to the ears and deafening. I hope I’m always open to hear both.
