Who is the God you know?
I’m listening to Emily P. Freeman’s The Quiet Collect for Advent. (You can download her app on your phone for free. The advent collection is for purchase).
This morning, I listened to her devotional titled, “Magnificat,” which means, a canticle used in Christian liturgy, especially at vespers and evensong, the text being the hymn of the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:46–55).
After Emily reads Luke 1: 46-55—Mary’s song about God, she asks:
“Who is the God you know?” Then she names various natives we might have about God…
“Would God be one who is silent, oversleeps, or forgets to call? A God who comforts, shows up, and cares?…”
Advent for me, is a time of deep reflection and anticipation of the coming Messiah. I ponder these questions today, thinking about the ways in which I perceive God. Are they true? And as Emily sweetly inquires, “Do you hope you’ve got it right? Or do you hope you’ve got it wrong?”
